About Me

I have always loved stories-stories told to me–stories read to me. But when I was finally able to put letters into words and words into sentences, I could finally read stories to myself. Entire worlds sprang up from the pages. Narnia, Prydain, Middle Earth, and Earthsea were fantastical, but others were set firmly in our contemporary or historical timeline. The Boston area of Louisa May Alcott. The Mississippi River of Mark Twain. Watership Down. NIMH. The New York of Edward Eager’s stories.

I feel privileged and grateful that three of my novels made it out into the world. My short fiction, articles, and poetry have appeared in Highlights, High Fives, Cricket, Boy’s Quest, and Hopscotch. I do have more stories to tell and hope to share them in the future. After moving 16 times since graduating from college, my husband and I now live near Grand Rapids, MI.

Places and Things That Impacted My Projects

The Abbaye de Royaumont. It was the site of the “local” writers’ conference when I lived in Europe.
The Dolomites. I have two projects that took place nearby.
Siena. An important scene from Saving the Griffin takes place here.
Saqqara. The oldest building in the world.
The 13th-century duomo in Merano, Italy. A site from Defending Irene.
An echo of this German ruin made it into Saving the Griffin.
Local castles in the Italian Tyrol.
The Avenue of Sphinxes at Karnak Temple.
The Dolomites.
How much for that griffin in the window? I found him in Siena. He took the train home with me.
Siena. Where another critical scene from Saving the Griffin occurs
